The Legacy Of Bobby Hull

‘The Golden Jet’ Bobby Hull was the most feared goal scorer of the 1960’s and 1970’s and arguably the greatest left wing to ever play professional hockey. Along with teammate Stan Mikita, Hull made the Chicago Blackhawks one of the NHLs true offensive powerhouses. He and Mikita were the first NHL players to use curved stick blades, which made his already wicked slapshot even more difficult to stop. This was a very significant development in pro hockey, and now its rare to find a player that plays with the flat stick blade that was once commonplace before Hull and Mikita’s revolutionary modification.

Hull was born and raised on a dairy farm near Belleville, Ontario. As a teenager it was obvious that he was on a fast track to NHL stardom, and he joined the Chicago Blackhawks not long after his 18th birthday. He would finish second in the leagues rookie of the year balloting in his first season and within a couple of years would become one of the NHLs marquee superstars. In 1961, he played an important role in the Blackhawks’ Stanley Cup championship victory.

In 1966, Hull broke a hallowed NHL scoring mark by becoming the first player to net more than 50 goals in a season. His 51st goal broke the record of 50 goals held by Montreal Canadien greats Bernie Boom Boom Geoffrion and Maurice Rocket Richard. Hull would go on to score 54 goals in the 1966 and would surpass that mark by scoring 58 in 1968.

Hulls tenure with the Chicago Blackhawks ended in 1972, when he jumped to the upstart World Hockey Association (WHA). Initially, Hulls response that he would jump ship for a million bucks was an offhanded joke but when the WHA ownership agreed to contribute to that sum thinking that it would provide instant credibility for the league it became a reality.

Hull would quickly resume his offensive onslaught in the upstart league for his new team, the Winnipeg Jets. He would lead the Jets to two league championship AVCO Cup victories and in 1977 set a new professional hockey record with 77 goals in a season.

Hull suffered from knee trouble throughout his career, and it eventually forced his retirement from hockey in 1979. He would play in a few games for the Whalers before calling it a career. With the exception of an abortive comeback attempt with the New York Rangers in 1981 that was the end of his professional hockey career.

Hull’s legacy lived on in flesh and blood with his third son, Brett Hull. The Hulls are the only father/son combination to ever score 50 goals in an NHL season and Brett will follow his father into the Hall of Fame this year.

Now 70 years old, Hull is still in good health and splits his time between Ontario and Chicago. He currently serves as a PR ambassador for the Blackhawks organization. He is expected to formally induct his son into the Hall of Fame at the ceremonies later this summer.

Anaheim Shreds Vancouver Goaltending In Blowout Win

After losing the services of starting goalie Roberto Luongo for the indefinite future with a broken rib, the Canucks may have breathed a sigh of relief too soon after backup goalie Andrew Raycroft’s performance in his first game in relief. After an excellent effort in an overtime victory over Los Angeles, Raycroft was torched for four goals in two periods before being pulled from the game. Corey Schneider, recently recalled from Manitoba of the AHL, played the third period in net giving up three more goals as Anaheim cruised to a 7-2 victory. The Canucks scored twice in the first five minutes of the game to lead 2-0 before giving up seven unanswered goals.

Anaheim has struggled to a 4-6-1 record this season, but rewarded their backers who chose to lay the -164 price as home favorites with the Ducks. The Canucks evened their record on the season at 7-7 with the loss. The 9 combined goals put on the board sailed OVER the posted total of 6. Anaheim has gone OVER in 6 of 11 while Vancouver evened their NHL totals record at 7-7.

The Ducks snapped a four game losing streak with the offensive outburst. Corey Perry and Bobby Ryan each tallied two goals and an assist in the lopsided victory. Mike Brown had the eventual game winning goal in the second period with his first career shorthanded marker, and even enforcer George Parros got in on the act with his first goal of the year. Jonas Hiller was sharp in goal for Anaheim, stopping 36 of 38 shots in the victory.

Vancouver’s problem this season has been not getting enough shots on goal and giving up too many. In the shootout victory over Los Angeles on Thursday, they were outshot 29-12 in regulation. They’d been kept in a number of games they should have lost due to the goaltending virtuosity of Luongo, and this game didn’t bode well for his absence. This was only the second time in eight games Vancouver has allowed more than two goals, a testimony to the ungodly skill of Luongo more than their defensive tenacity.

Raycroft is expected to be back between the pipes for Vancouver’s next game, a Sunday home date against the Colorado Avalanche. The Canucks will host the New York Rangers on Tuesday night before a road game against the Minnesota Wild on Thursday. Anaheim will play at Phoenix on Saturday night before returning to the Honda Center for the next two games. They’ll host the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday before welcoming the Nashville Predators to southern California later in the week.

Viewing The Stars With High Power Binoculars

High power binoculars are just one of the many types of binoculars. A binocular is like using two small telescopes and each eye will have its own eye piece, prime focal point, objective lenses and exit pupil. With the correct orientation you can see many objects that are far away just like they were up close.

When choosing a pair of binoculars you want high quality binoculars as these will have excellent optical and mechanical parts. All quality binoculars will be more expensive but the extra money is worth it and a pair of high powered quality binoculars can last you a long time.

It is the power or magnification of the binoculars that will dictate how detailed and near you can see objects that re far away. Most binoculars will come with 6x through 10x magnification. You can also find variable power binoculars though variable power binoculars tend to have better quality at the lower magnifications.

When using high powered binoculars you should have some sort of image stabilization or use a tripod with the binoculars. This is necessary because besides having greater magnification or what you are looking at they will also magnify any slight movements that you make.

High powered binoculars are very large. This is because the higher the magnification the more light that is needed. This results in needed a very large objective lens which makes the binoculars very large and potentially heavy. It also may take some time to learn how to use high powered binoculars properly as they have a much smaller viewing field then lower magnification binoculars.

While high powered binoculars can be large and expensive if you are going to use them frequently for astronomical viewing then they can be a great purchase. It is recommended that you find binoculars that meet your needs rather than purchasing the highest powered binoculars that you can.

The 5 Greatest Athletes In Sports History

Considering that just about none of us were alive at the turn of the 20th century, it’s hard to write this article without at least a trace of bias.

When we didn’t live to see the impact these athletes made, we can’t fully appreciate what they did for the sports world. Still, their legends have been chronicled and it’s clear that many men during the 20th century were just as big in the world as the current stars of our favorite sports.

It’s hard to narrow this list down to five, but these are the five men who I think had more meaning to their sports than any others. This is all subject to opinion, and I’d love to hear yours.

The first person I’ll mention is a baseball player whose impact could never be felt today like it was a century ago. Ty Cobb was one of the most influential baseball players in baseball history, and is largely responsible for the sport’s popularity.

Muhammad Ali. This man brought boxing to its height and electrified a world of fans. He’s still talked about every single day as the best boxer of all-time.

In the soccer world, most will agree that Pele was the best man to ever play the sport. While soccer isn’t as big in the US, this is the world’s biggest sport. Pele could by and large be considered the most influential athlete in the world.

In baseball, no one gets more credit for shaping the sport than Babe Ruth does. He changed the way people watched the sport, and turned it into the biggest thing in the country. He also helped the Yankees to a dynasty that still lives on to this day.

In the basketball world, everyone wants to be like Mike. Many of us were fortunate enough to see him in action, and Jordan was the kind of athlete whose talent is witnessed once in a lifetime.

Wonderful Presents For Men Are All Around Us…

In this article we will focus on ideas for finding and selecting perfect presents for men. With the holiday season soon upon us, now is the time to get started. In future articles we will be offering our TOP PICKS…gift ideas that we think are so special and unique you should definitely check them out. For now, let’s get started in ascertaining how to find that perfect gift for that special guy on your gift list.

What is the best way to ensure that you get something? Ask for it, right? So, given this principle, why not ask that guy on your gift list what they would like to receive? They might tell you outright, but more often than not they will evade the question. Just keep them talking, and listen intently to everything they say. When you come away from the conversation you will have some great ideas on what to get them. Be sure to write everything down when you get the chance…your memory will fade given time…

Consider the lifestyle of the guy on your list. Is he a workaholic who spends most of his time on the job? Is he a student who always seems to have his “nose in the books”. Is he a sports fan who is constantly glued to the television? A party animal who loves to dance the night away? A health food purist who knows where to get the best organic produce? Often the lifestyle a guy has will determine what they would like to receive in terms of a present.

When someone is rich they can pretty well go out and get whatever they want. You might want to take a more personal approach and make something for him. Would he like to receive some baked goods made from your own hands? If you are good at woodwork or sewing or painting, he might like to see some of your handy work. Anything that you make yourself will tell him that you cared enough about him to invest your time.

Just how well do you know this guy anyway? If you just know him on a casual basis it would be inappropriate to get him something that is too personal. If you just know him in passing, getting him a T-Shirt that says something suggestive would be a bit much. Consider what type of gift you would like to get from him. That should help you out immensely.

Does this guy have a particular hobby? Gifts that compliment a hobby are often wonderful to give and receive. Even if you know nothing about this hobby, you can always do a bit of homework and find out more. Why not post a question on the internet, or call your local hobby store, and ask them what a good gift would be? People always love to talk about their hobbies and would be more than happy to help you out.

We hope that this article has been insightful and helpful, and you now have some fantastic ideas on getting presents for men. Our next article will feature our TOP PICKS, but if you can’t wait, please visit us on our blog…

See All The Details With Powerful Binoculars

Powerful binoculars can be great to see objects far away but powerful binoculars are only really good in certain situations. As anyone will tell you bigger does not necessarily mean that they are better as there are many advantages and disadvantages to using powerful binoculars.

When someone speaks about powerful binoculars then they are referring to the magnification of the binoculars. The greater the magnification the more powerful the binocular. Along with being able to see objects that are very far away the more powerful the binoculars the more details you will be able to make out.

It is important to remember that the higher the magnification the more light you will need. If you plan on using the binoculars with low light then you may not want super magnification. Along with magnification you want to have a larger objective lens as this will gather more light. A greater objective lens generally makes the binoculars larger but are worth it as the image quality will not suffer.

Many times powerful binoculars tend to be very big and you should think about size. If you don’t want to carry around a large set of binoculars then you may want to look for something with lower magnification. Higher magnification binoculars also will exaggerate any slight movements you make. With very high magnification you want binoculars that incorporate slight movements or you may want to bring along a tripod.

This means that you may now be carrying a lot of equipment and if you plan on doing extensive hiking and carrying your binoculars you might want to find a lighter more compact pair of binoculars. The choice is up to you.

Make sure you find a pair of binoculars that fit your needs. Binoculars are great to see things in the distance and if you use them a lot can be a great tool.

Things Keep Getting Worse for the Cleveland Browns

The Cleveland Browns are looking quite miserable. After a very disappointing 2008 season, it doesn’t look like things are much better so far in 2009.

Looking at the cast of players in Cleveland, it doesn’t seem like there’s much for them to be too excited about either.

There was Brady Quinn, a young quarterback with a promising future, and Eric Mangini, who came over as the team’s new head coach after being dismissed from New York.

The 09′ season for the Browns has been dismal at best. Brady Quinn is scrambling for his life and Derek Anderson has yet to regain his form from the 07′ season. When two different quarterbacks throw more interceptions then touchdown passes, you know you are in trouble.

The team lost a 27-6 game to the Broncos in Denver. The Broncos had one of the downright worst defenses in the 2008 season, and they looked absolutely spectacular in week 2 against the Browns. The Browns didn’t have anything going their way on either side of the ball.

Donte Stallworth would have provide Brady Quinn or Derek Anderson a target, Stallworth is suspended by the NFL for a DUI vehicular manslaughter incident in the off-season.

So maybe Denver really does have a good defense. Is it possible?

There’s a good chance that the Browns will be just as bad as they were in 2008, and possibly even worse. Mangini or not, this team needs some serious help in 2009 and they need more than a few good draft picks.

More Bad Celebrity Themed Pinball Machines

This time we wont rank the bad celebrity pinball machines, well look at several different genres of bad celebrity tie ins:

THE BOX OFFICE BOMB THEMED MACHINE:

In 1991 Williams Pinball released a machine based on Terminator 2 and it was good. It had a gun trigger to launch the ball and a ton of Arnolds catch phrases like Ill be back keyed to various game objectives. The film was a huge hit, and everything worked well together. Now the bad news: because of the success of this machine the production companies thought Hmm. What well do is release the pinball machine simultaneously with the film. That way we can use the machine to market the film and popularize the characters and catch phrases. Thatll also help our merchandising sales.

Unfortunately, this thinking led to a number of pinball machines based on films that were absolute bombs. Some examples of this genre are machines based on The Last Action Hero, Judge Dredd and Hook. There wasnt a cooler cartoon than The Flintstones. So how do you screw up a Flintstones pinball machine? Just base the theme not on the classic Hanna Barbara cartoon, but on the horrible film starring John Goodman and Rosie ODonnell.

My all time favorite of the “bomb” themed machine has to be “Waterworld”. Waterworld was released in 1995 starring Kevin Costner and quickly became the definitive big budget, no box office film replacing Michael Ciminos Heavens Gate and the Dustin Hoffman/Warren Beatty comedy Ishtar.

Playing a bomb themed pinball machine is downright surreal. The most pitiful thing is when the machine booms out a catch phrase from the film that no one is familiar with. Fortunately, this trend died out with the demise of most of the pinball manufacturing companies. The remaining pinball maker, Stern Pinball, has learned from this mistake filled era and only does machines based around cool themes like The Sopranos and The World Poker Tour

THE DUBIOUSLY TIMED THEME:

This genre includes themes that would have been pretty cool, except for the fact they were released well after the subjects peak of popularity. Gilligans Island would have been great back in the mid-1960s or even in the late 70s when a new generation discovered the show in syndication. In 1991 it was just creepy since nearly half of the cast members depicted on the backglass were dead. Clint Eastwood as Dirty Harry would have been a perfect fit for a pinball theme, except that its 1995 release came 8 years after the debut of the last film in the series (The Dead Pool). Popeye Saves the Earth was released 15 years after the release of the Robert Altman film.

Undoubtedly the strangest machine of this genre is 1994s Mario Andretti. The backglass didn’t display a picture of a young Andretti at the height of his racing career, but rather an image of grizzled old Mario Andretti. The smart move would have been to use his name, throw a bunch of race cars on the backglass and playfield and call it a day. Instead having the sixty-something race car driver on the backglass is vaguely akin to having your grandfather looking over your shoulder while you play.

ROOT,ROOT, ROOT FOR THE HOME TEAM:

A comment on the original celebrity theme article mentioned this genre and it is a good one. Its important to understand that the pinball industry has been based in Chicago for most of its history. Presumably for that reason there have been some machines featuring the local sports teams and stars. Chicago Cubs Triple Play isnt too bad due to the Cubbies national popularity. The Big Hurt Frank Thomas was a solid major league ballplayer, but not really worthy of a pinball machine themed around him. The most egregious example of this was 1978s Bobby Orrs Power Play, released not long after the trade that sent Orr from Boston to Chicago. Nationally, no one outside of Boston and Chicago cared. My hunch is that it was made to scam some free season tickets out of the Blackhawks management.

THE BAD CONVERSION FOR THE INTERNATIONAL MARKET:

This requires a little bit of an explanation: for reasons that Ive never been quite clear on it was common practice to rebrand a perfectly good game for the International market. Sometimes it was released by the US company, other times it was licensed to a foreign operation. Youd think that there would be some creative control over the rebranded themes. Youd be wrong.

While I have a good grasp on the US pinball demographic I have no idea who plays pinball internationally. Based on some of the re-themed machines its probably better I dont know. Mata Hari was a classic machine of the early 1980s. The German release was rethemed as the more foreboding Lady Death. This one at least makes sense as they had some Nazi imagery that Germans are understandably sensitive about (despite being historically inaccurate, since the real Mata Hari was executed during WW I). Less understandable is the retheming of a military themed game called Special Force in the US to the downright bizarre Special Forces Girls, featuring comely women in low cut, cleavage baring fatigues.

Tips For Choosing Airsoft Guns

Beginners who are into airsoft are often faced with the decision on the kind of gun they are to use during game play. Undeniably, there is a wide variety of airsoft guns in the market today that makes it confusing for a beginner. But there is an easy way to know what kind of gun is right for you. Just simply determine what kind of game you play and how you play it so that you can tell which gun can give you your money’s worth.

The first step in choosing the right airsoft gun is to research its different types as well as each one’s product ratings. The three main types of airsoft guns are electric, spring-action, and pressurized gas guns. It also comes in five different styles, namely, rifle, machine gun, shotgun, sniper rifle, and hand gun.

From there, you can now tell how much you like a certain gun. Your friends and teammates can give you their opinions and recommendations for the gun that is suitable for you.

An airsoft supply store in your neighborhood is another source of excellent gun recommendation. Their salesmen will be able to tell you the kind of gun that is suitable for you. With their expertise in airsoft guns, you can surely trust their recommendations.

Getting used airsoft guns is also an option you can take. Used airsoft guns are cheap and therefore, will give you extra money to purchase more guns. With many guns, you can use a different one each time you play and then you can tell which gun gives you a great performance.

Researching online is another thing you can do to choose the right airsoft gun. Airsoft forums are aplenty and there are categories solely dedicated to airsoft guns discussions. Checking these threads out will give you a better idea on the kinds of guns available for you to use.

The Denver Broncos are Looking Special

Wow! After a disappointing 2008 campaign and one of the worst defensive performances around, the Broncos were looking pretty dreadful. On top of this, their star quarterback, Jay Cutler, demanded a trade, and their star wide receiver, Brandon Marshall, refused to play.

The 2008 season was a disappointment – while the Broncos have started out well, their strength of schedule is one of the most difficult in the league. If the Broncos go 8-8 it will be a miracle. As good as the 09′ season started for the Broncos, it can sink just as fast.

New head coach Josh McDaniels didn’t start his new job off with a bang. After upsetting QB Jay Cutler to the point where he wanted to be traded, the Broncos looks as they were doomed.

Sure, their first two opponents have been relatively easy ones. The Browns at home is a game they should be expected to win, and the Bengals in Cincinnati? Well, usually one would see this as an easy one too, except for the fact that the Bengals just marched into Green Bay last Sunday and came away with an unexpected win.

The Broncos defense has been a huge surprise thus far. They have the one of the top ranked defenses in the league as of now. Their defense was they Achilles heal in 08′ and cost them a chance at the playoffs.

The Browns offense is pretty bad, but the Bengals have always been strong as long as Carson Palmer’s around. With Palmer back in the line up, it opens up a ton of room for their running game.

Individually, the Broncos are doing well on defense too. Take Elvis Dumervil, for example, whose four sacks during the first two quarters against the Browns are more than any Denver Bronco has ever achieved in a half of football.

Now that’s serious. If Denver can keep this level of play up on defense, they’re going to surprise a lot of fans. We all know that defense wins championships!
