When you race any race that is put on by UCI, either a UCI qualifying event or a World Cup, you’re given a period of 5sec. before and 5sec. after to go down so you have a 10sec. window in which to leave.
You can’t see it but there’s also a green light on the clock that comes on as soon as you can go. Still have not figured out why at any race put on by UCI I always seem to go on the 3sec. mark.

Each racer can start anytime during the five second countdown. There is an electric eye that automatically starts the racers timer when they leave the gate.
how does the start work, why do they go as they’re counting down?
