CAV 17’s tabbed No. 1

Sarah Harper Lindsey Hurt

Junior Olympics is volleyball's version of AAU basketball. This is where the scholarships are given out. Charlottesville Area Volleyball Club fields eight teams from 12-and-under all the way up to 17’s with players from across Central Virginia.

The CAV's top team is coached by Albemarle High School's Mark Ragland and has players from AHS, Western Albemarle and Fluvanna County.

School Board must redistrict AHS

Alright, lets get to it.

I think the majority of us are in favor of Albemarle High School dropping down to Group AA status and being welcomed with open arms into the Jefferson District.

To make this happen, the School Board would have to redistrict about 200 students to Western Albemarle High School and Monticello High School, respectively.

This move, I guarantee you, will ruffle the feathers of some very vocal parents, who will undoubtedly go to war against it.

Western track shows balance; CHS, OCHS have starpower

The former back-to-back Group AA cross country champions a few years ago, the Warriors have also been able to translate that success to the track, most notably a trifecta of state indoor titles from 2003-2005.

2007 WinS banquet honorees

On June 4th, 2007, the Women in Sports organization (WinS) held their annual banquet at St. Anne’s-Belfield’s Convocation Center.

Local news anchor (WCAV-TV) Beth Duffy presented athletes from the six area high schools who were nominated in eleven sports.

In addition, three scholarships were given to student-athletes for leadership, sportspersonship and academic achievement.

For the first time ever, Western Albemarle captured both the boys and girls team titles at Monday’s weather-delayed Jefferson District meet.

With the Commonwealth’s fastest 1600 meter (4:14.65), 1000 meter (2:26.11) and 800 meter (1:51.63) times, Mostrag marched through the indoor season undefeated, capping his unblemished year with a thrilling come-from-behind victory in the 800 meters at the indoor national meet.

Fanning sisters sizzle for Va. Tech

It’s about time we get to know the name Maurice Jackson.

The son of a former Harlem Globetrotter, Jackson pushed Charlottesville to a 55-49 victory over Western Albemarle in the championship showdown of the Holiday Classic.

Jackson logged a game-high 23 points, with nine coming from downtown, earning tournament most valuable player honors in the process.

Pierce paces Western to 'W'

I don’t think there’s any question that the surprise win in the opening round of the Holiday Classic was the thumping Head Coach Darren Maynard and the Western Albemarle Warriors put on Heritage High, a bully of sorts in past post-Christmas tourneys.

In the victory, new-kid-on-the-block Christian Pierce tallied a career-high 14 points for the Warriors, who face a tough challenge tonight in Head Coach Kareem Martin and the Monticello boys basketball team in semifinal action of the Holiday Classic.
