Louisa County baseball

The Jefferson District baseball championship brought about another close high school game, albeit not as pretty as the semi-final games. Louisa County and Fluvanna County both hit the ball well and the pitchers also did good work.

However, you can count on both teams working on their fielding in practice today.

His father's footsteps

Tuesday was Andrew Sheridan’s birthday. He would have turned 82 years old.

Instead, he made his way upstairs on December 18, 2007 after serving Fluvanna County for decades in a number of capacities, including as an undertaker, part-time doctor, head of the rescue squad, a school bus driver and, of course, as a t-ball-to-big-kid baseball coach.

Junior Olympics is volleyball's version of AAU basketball. This is where the scholarships are given out. Charlottesville Area Volleyball Club fields eight teams from 12-and-under all the way up to 17’s with players from across Central Virginia.

The CAV's top team is coached by Albemarle High School's Mark Ragland and has players from AHS, Western Albemarle and Fluvanna County.

For the first time ever, Western Albemarle captured both the boys and girls team titles at Monday’s weather-delayed Jefferson District meet.

Relying on their traditionally strong distance runners and pole vaulters, the Warriors were able to pick up enough points in the other events to narrowly defeat runner-up Louisa County on both sides.

Munro Rateau

There was a stretch in Erin Rateau’s life where she spent more birthday parties at the Virginia High School League state boys basketball tournament than with hordes of friends, birthday cake and party favors in palatial Palmyra.

In fact, the tournament birthdays have almost turned into a running joke within the Rateau family.

Q&A with Danielle Dike

Fluvanna County two-sport standout Danielle Dike recently signed a National Letter of Intent to play softball at Georgia Tech. Dike, a first-team All-Jefferson District selection in 2007, batted .339 last season with two home runs, 26 RBI, 22 hits, 22 runs and 39 total bases.
