Terrell admits end is near

Thirty years ago, Harry Terrell pounded the Charlottesville High sidelines as an assistant coach on the freshmen boys hoops team.

It was in these early years that Terrell earned his coaching stripes, rising quickly from ninth grade assistant to head coach with super stars like Phil Stinnie and Tom Calloway matriculating through the ranks.

Western track shows balance; CHS, OCHS have starpower

Much like their male counterparts, the Western Albemarle has a long tradition in stellar distance running.

The former back-to-back Group AA cross country champions a few years ago, the Warriors have also been able to translate that success to the track, most notably a trifecta of state indoor titles from 2003-2005.

2007 WinS banquet honorees

On June 4th, 2007, the Women in Sports organization (WinS) held their annual banquet at St. Anne’s-Belfield’s Convocation Center.

Local news anchor (WCAV-TV) Beth Duffy presented athletes from the six area high schools who were nominated in eleven sports.

In addition, three scholarships were given to student-athletes for leadership, sportspersonship and academic achievement.

For the first time ever, Western Albemarle captured both the boys and girls team titles at Monday’s weather-delayed Jefferson District meet.

Relying on their traditionally strong distance runners and pole vaulters, the Warriors were able to pick up enough points in the other events to narrowly defeat runner-up Louisa County on both sides.

Barbour plays, Tech falls to UNC

Charlottesville High graduate Andrea Barbour scored 11 points in limited minutes, and the Virginia Tech women's hoops team tumbled late to third-ranked North Carolina 79-59 in Blacksburg.

Barbour, a 2007 CHS grad, played just 14 minutes in her first game back from a shoulder injury.

With Kevin Leatherwood out of the lineup with an ankle injury, Charlottesville High lost its opening two games of the JD regular season.

Sounds crazy, but in the end, I think the time without Leatherwood could actually help the Black Knights from a maturation standpoint.

Leatherwood leads by example

It’s hard to put into words what Kevin Leatherwood means to the Charlottesville boys basketball team.

Lets face it — Leatherwood can guard five positions and play five on the other end. He’s also added a new dimension to his game, showing that he can initiate Mitch Minor’s offense with creativity and, most importantly, efficiency.

It all makes up Leatherwood the player, but Leatherwood the leader could mean even more.

It’s about time we get to know the name Maurice Jackson.

The son of a former Harlem Globetrotter, Jackson pushed Charlottesville to a 55-49 victory over Western Albemarle in the championship showdown of the Holiday Classic.

Jackson logged a game-high 23 points, with nine coming from downtown, earning tournament most valuable player honors in the process.

Leatherwood, Minor have big-time upside for Charlottesville

After jumping out to an early advantage, the Charlottesville boys basketball team showcased its resolve in holding off a pesky Waynesboro club and 6-foot-8 behemoth Nick Gore, 64-53, in the opening round of the Holiday Classic.

Kevin Leatherwood, a physical 6-foot-2 southpaw, absolutely dominated the game for stretches for the Black Knights, who improved to 4-1 overall entering tonight’s showdown against Culpeper County.

Tip-off is slated for 9 p.m. at Monticello.

You can add an all-tournament selection on the ever growing resume for 2007 Charlottesville High graduate Andrea “Kitty Kat” Barbour, a freshman standout for Head Coach Beth Dunkenberger and the Virginia Tech women's basketball team.

Barbour earned all-tourney honors at the Tulane Double Tree Classic as the Hokies dropped Texas San Antonio and Robert Morris to take home first place.

Charlottesville High product Andrea Barbour has scored in double figures in all six games this season for Virginia Tech and Head Coach Beth Dunkenberger, whose team improved to 6-1 on the year with a 75-60 victory over Wofford on Tuesday.

Barbour, a true freshman, logged a career-high 29 points in a home win over Liberty on Nov. 19. Barbour has the green light to score on offense and is averaging nearly 30 minutes per game on offense.
