CAV 17’s tabbed No. 1

Junior Olympics is volleyball's version of AAU basketball. This is where the scholarships are given out. Charlottesville Area Volleyball Club fields eight teams from 12-and-under all the way up to 17’s with players from across Central Virginia.

The former back-to-back Group AA cross country champions a few years ago, the Warriors have also been able to translate that success to the track, most notably a trifecta of state indoor titles from 2003-2005.

For the first time ever, Western Albemarle captured both the boys and girls team titles at Monday’s weather-delayed Jefferson District meet.

At least since I started covering the team (Andrea Barbour’s freshman year), I can’t remember the last time the Black Knights have dropped back-to-back Jefferson District contests, especially two that meant so much.

You look at Bobby Bigler, hear he’s going to play college football and immediately realize this must be one of the toughest (you fill in the blank) in Central Virginia today.

At a “listed” 5-foot-10, 180-pounds, Bigler made an impact last season at wide receiver, running back and as a kick returner for the Hornets, who narrowly missed the postseason for a fourth time in as many years.

While high school seniors sign their National Letters of Intent, Monticello junior quarterback Mike Graham is just beginning to make his mark after leading the Mustang football program to a Group AA State Championship victory over Richlands High School last season

At 6-foot-4, 195 pounds, Graham has the frame of the prototype drop-back passer and is equipped with textbook fundamentals, especially with his ball-handling (play action in particular) and short to intermediate passing game.

ST. GEORGE - Led by UNC committment Ed Davis, the Benedictine boys hoops team strolled into St. George Saturday night sporting a slick 19-3 overall record and No. 2 state ranking.

Blue Ridge and Benedictine first met on last December 11, and Davis, a prized ACC recruit, eventually landed by Head Coach Roy Williams and UNC, poured in 20 points as the Barons struggled to find consistency on offense in an easy 60-44 Benedictine win.

Steve Brown is a goal-oriented young man. After three years of varsity football at St. Anne’s-Belfield, Brown was shown lukewarm interest, despite gaudy numbers and excellent upside as a 6-foot, 190-pound linebacker.

With “a couple Division I-AA walk-on offers” at his disposal following his senior year, Brown sat down with his parents and assessed his college future in very frank terms.

With the Commonwealth’s fastest 1600 meter (4:14.65), 1000 meter (2:26.11) and 800 meter (1:51.63) times, Mostrag marched through the indoor season undefeated, capping his unblemished year with a thrilling come-from-behind victory in the 800 meters at the indoor national meet.

Barbour plays, Tech falls to UNC

Charlottesville High graduate Andrea Barbour scored 11 points in limited minutes, and the Virginia Tech women's hoops team tumbled late to third-ranked North Carolina 79-59 in Blacksburg.

Barbour, a 2007 CHS grad, played just 14 minutes in her first game back from a shoulder injury.

After representing Central Virginia proudly in the Group AAA cross country championship in the fall, Sinclair is racking up points for the AHS Indoor Track and Field team.

Sinclair is currently ranked third in the 1,600 meters in the CVaSports.com Girls Indoor Track and Field Honor Roll.

When the William Monroe boys hoops team dropped visiting Western Albemarle 49-46 on Friday evening, it was the first time that a current male student-athlete at WMHS has beaten Western in any athletic event outside of Mike Moyers and the golf team.

You may not know Melissa Estepp yet, but there are a handful of Jefferson District head coaches who have her penciled in on their scouting reports.

Estepp, a senior floor general, is currently leading the Monticello girls basketball team in scoring, and put a huge scare into both Charlottesville and Louisa County last week.
