UNC finds talent in CVa

Meg Freshwater Logan Ripley

The North Carolina women’s lacrosse team found two talented student-athletes in Central Virginia who are now key contributors for the Tar Heels lax program.

St. Anne’s-Belfield’s Meg Freshwater and Albemarle High’s Logan Ripley have helped push UNC to a 6-2 overall start.

A co-captain, Freshwater is a senior midfielder who has tallied 20 points or more in each of her first three seasons in Chapel Hill, including 21 last year.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Freshwater is currently majoring in political science. She was selected to tryout for the 2007-08 U.S. Women's Elite and Developmental teams.

Freshwater’s father, Tom, was a member of the Virginia track and field team from 1972-76. Freshwater was a two-time All-American at St. Anne's Belfield under Head Coach Mary Blake.

A sophomore goalkeeper, Ripley was the top backup to senior All-American Kristen Hordey last year.

Ripley, who is yet to declare a major, is splitting minutes in the cage with Amanda Barnes, a senior from Maryland.

Ripley played three years of varsity lacrosse at Albemarle High, and helped lead the Patriots to back-to-back state championship appearances.

Virginia dropped North Carolina 16-5 on Sunday in Charlottesville to push the Heels to 0-1 in the ACC.

The Tar Heels host Duke on Saturday.
