Prince William

“You should only do something if you truly love to do it. Life is short and everything you do should be enjoyable.”

Those are Willy Crawford's words.

No stranger to winning, Crawford finished third overall in the Group AA 171-pound state wrestling tournament and first in the sophomore division.

Backed by devastating strength, Crawford defeated six-of-seven opponents after falling in the early rounds. Crawford rebounded later and dropped the same competitor in the semifinals.

“The state tournament was like no other tournament I have been a part of," said Crawford, who hopes to wrestle at the University of Virginia. "The atmosphere is amazing. There is a large roaring crowd all around you and the whole experience is electrifying."

Following the state tourney, Crawford attended a tournament in Harrisonburg on March 22nd and 23rd. He easily captured the tourney title by pinning two opponents, while defeating one by points.

Crawford has enjoyed success thanks to a tremendous work ethic and a positive approach to the pads.

“My dad really motivates me to push myself to the next level," Crawford said. "At practice, I lift weights, run for 20 minutes, wrestle live against teammates and finish up with wind sprints.”

Crawford is looking forward to wrestling on the University of Virginia Freestyle team. He hopes to have a more successful season next year by capturing the Group AA state championship.

“I’m going to wrestle hard this summer and keep up my productive training workouts," he said. "Next season, I should be able to accomplish my goal and bring home a state championship.”

This is Keith Pillow's second submission to CVaSports.com. Keith is a student-athlete at Fluvanna County High School.
