Save the Date: May 5, first annual CVa Basketball Banquet
By Jerry Miller
The clock is ticking on the first annual Central Virginia Basketball Banquet!
In conjunction with CVaSports.com, the BD Basketball Foundation is hosting an evening to remember. The Central Virginia Basketball Banquet is an opportunity for the CVa Sports community to spotlight student-athletes for all the right reasons!
CHARACTER.
ACADEMIC SUCCESS.
INTEGRITY.
DISCIPLINE.
ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE.
“We’re very excited to be a part of an event that intentionally recognizes those student-athletes in our community that most exude character in sports,” said Ben D’Alessandro, the director and founder of the BD Basketball School. “This is a unique opportunity for the basketball programs from all Central Virginia area high schools to come together and say ‘thank you.””
Make sure to save the date Monday, May 5. We will host the festivities at the Omni Hotel on the Downtown Mall, starting at 7 p.m. We have scheduled this event on Monday evening to avoid any potential conflicts with the spring sports season.
It’s at “dress casual” event at the Omni Hotel.
“We are very pleased to be working with the BD Basketball Foundation at CVaSports.com,” said Jerry Miller, the president and publisher of CVaSports.com. “Thanks to Ben D’Alessandro’s hard work, due diligence and vision, the BD Basketball Foundation has blossomed into a service organization with the most genuine of intentions – highlighting student athletes of tremendous character, integrity and academic success,”
“It is our intention for this banquet to leave a lasting impression on the families of Central Virginia,” said Miller, who will emcee the banquet. “This is the beginning of what will be a long-standing tradition that we can nurture within other sporting realms like football, baseball, soccer and lacrosse.”
Central Virginia’s 17 high schools have been extended invitations.
We are also very privileged to have Gene Corrigan, the former athletics director at the University of Virginia, Washington and Lee and Notre Dame, the one-time President of the NCAA and former commissioner of the ACC, as our keynote speaker.
Corrigan has exemplified character in our area for over four decades.
In regards to the nomination procedure, all of Central Virginia’s athletics directors and head basketball coaches have been asked to name a male underclassman and a female underclassman for the "Character Achievement" award from each respective high school. They have also been asked to nominate a male senior and a female senior "Scholar Athlete" award.
Furthermore, one inspiration award, one coaching character award (for a Coach of the Year) and one outstanding performer award will also be issued at the banquet.
“Our foundation is about using the sport of basketball for skill and character development. We have been growing and want to continue to expand our role in supporting local youth and high school coaches, by being a resource in addition to the scholastic experience that can help develop young people,” D’Alessandro explained.
“What better way to do this than to take part in a function that spotlights those young athletes that have stood out in these ways.”
