Back injury won't stop Early

She didn’t say it was easy.

There were demanding sessions with physical therapists. Time-consuming adjustments with chiropractors. Exhausting periods with athletic trainers.

There was even a steroid injection.

“It was for my SI joints,” she said. “It helped.”

Ashley Early has reached the top of poll vaulting – literally – but now is in the midst of the toughest mental challenge of her collegiate career.

After vaulting her way into the Virginia Tech record books in 2007, Early has been riddled with a lower back injury, making an inevitable decision to redshirt a reality for the precocious Western Albemarle graduate.

“I knew all along that I was going to take five years. My goals are to vault past college, so taking a fifth year with [VT pole vaulting coach] Bob [Phillips] is definitely worth it,” said Early, a four-time All-American at Western, who arrived in Blacksburg as the all-time state record holder with a mark of 12-feet, 6.25 inches.

“They say everything happens for a reason. I know this is just going to make me stronger as an athlete and stronger mentally.”

Early captured the ACC outdoor championship with a personal-best and school-record of 13-feet, 5.75 inches in 2007.

She was the ACC runner-up in indoors as well, while setting another school record at the VT Last Chance meet with a jump of 13-feet, 2.25 inches.

A sophomore at Virginia Tech, Early is a redshirt freshman within the Hokie track and field program. She is majoring in human development but is committed to representing the United States in the Olympics.

“The injury has put a damper on trying to qualify [for Beijing in 2008],” Early said, “but I’m definitely looking at London.”

Still, she admitted it is a step-by-step process, and as of a January 18th meet, Early was unable to even try a practice run.

“I couldn’t leave the ground without being in excruciating pain,” she remembered. “It’s been quite a struggle, but I’ve come a long way.”

Today, Early is focused on rehabilitation while building strength and improving technique. She would like to finish her career as an All-American and perhaps a National Champion.

“With more training, it’s definitely a reasonable goal.”
