Charlottesville hires Fraser to head football program

Charlottesville High School

Charlottesville High will officially announce Chris Fraser as its new head football coach in a press conference this afternoon, Athletics Director Rick Lilly confirmed with CVaSports.com.

Fraser replaces Garwin DeBerry, who retired after 28 fine years on the job.

Fraser returned Smithfield High to prominence in the Bay Rivers District. He assumed the reigns at Smithfield in 2002 and led SHS to the playoffs in two out of the last three seasons.

SHS finished 23-7 over Fraser's last three years.

Fraser’s offense averaged more than 34.0 points per contest last season while totaling more than 400 yards per game in total offense. His lead running back,
Virginia Tech bound Dyrell Roberts, rushed for over 2,200 yards.

Fraser was the 2005 Bay Rivers Coach of the Year.

Fraser was the Dean of Students at Smithfield High School from
2004-2007. He taught health, physical education and drivers education
from 2002-2003.

Before Smithfield, Fraser was the head coach at Jamestown High
School from 1997-1999 and the offensive coordinator at Courtland High
School from 1993-1996.

Fraser will assume the role of head football coach, Heath and PE
teacher and spring Assistant Athletic Director at Charlottesville High
School.

Dear Jerry, Is it your understanding
that Coach Fraser will receive greater
financial compensation in taking the
head football position at Charlottesville,
than staying where he is? Why did
this coach wish to move? Is this a step
up the ladder? Best wishes, G-Money

Yeah, looks like you all got a pretty good coach.

Fraser did some good things down here at Smithfield.

Here's a nice article/profile on Fraser, from the Tidewater Sports Report:

http://www.tidewatersportsreport.com/2007/12/fraser-returned-winning-program-back-to.html

It notes that when "Fraser was named head coach of the Smithfield Packers, he inherited one of the worst teams in the Bay Rivers District."

As you mention, though, Smithfield went 23-7 in Fraser's last three years, so he must know what he's doing.

Good catch.
