CAV 17’s tabbed No. 1

Sarah Harper Lindsey Hurt

Junior Olympics is volleyball's version of AAU basketball. This is where the scholarships are given out. Charlottesville Area Volleyball Club fields eight teams from 12-and-under all the way up to 17’s with players from across Central Virginia.

The CAV's top team is coached by Albemarle High School's Mark Ragland and has players from AHS, Western Albemarle and Fluvanna County.

On Sunday, Feb 17, the Young Gunz won the The Western Albemarle Invitational 17's tournament by beating the Salem 17's team in the Championship, while going undefeated for the day.

Kara Elder, Sarah Deal, Laura Gomez and Kayla Walker led the attack by registering blistering kills all day long. Abby Hendrix and Meg Carpenter dished out numerous assists during the day, while Sarah Harper and Hanna Lawson contributed significantly on defense and at the service line.

The Young Gunz victory at Western Albemarle gave them back-to-back tournament championships, after going undefeated at JMU on the 5th of February. The Gunz are now 17-1 on the season in match play and the top-ranked team in the Old Dominion Region.

CAV is hosting six courts of volleyball at the University of Virginia on March 1st and 2nd - three each at Memorial Gym and Slaughter Rec Center, where over 50 teams from Tidewater to Roanoke will be competing in ages from 13 to 18’s.
