LYNCHBURG - Entering Saturday's Group AA, Division 3 state championship, Richlands had registered a 49-5 record over the past four seasons and had advanced to the state championship the previous two, while earning a state semifinals berth in 2004.
As the top-rated team in Division 3 to close the year, Monticello clearly was not too much of an underdog, if at all. Still, the Mustangs' victory surprised many across the Commonwealth.

Sitting here, watching the cursor blink, still very impressed with Monticello’s bruising of Poquoson on Saturday in the Group AA, Division 3 state championship.
The Mustangs (12-1) dominated every facet of the game – really they only had two bad plays the entire afternoon – and just had too many athletes for the visiting Islanders on a high-exposure stage.
I really liked how MHS responded in front of a packed (an estimated 3,400), emotional house. Expect the congregation and pageantry to only grow on Saturday at Liberty University against Richlands.
